Dear Parents (and Students) --
I met with MUSD Math Teachers last Monday, 3/18/19. MHS teachers requested that middle school teachers continue to encourage number sense, the ability to do mental math. Some students rely on a calculator for the simplest of calculations. For example, one high school student used a calculator to determine 4x1.
Understanding and memorizing math facts, including perfect squares and cubes, contributes to number sense, and directly satisfies CA State Standard Math 8.EE.2. Further, confidence with exponential expressions contributes to success and fluency in Math I CA State Standards. Our class math songs promote number sense and fluency. Parents can encourage number sense by talking about numbers with their students, and playing quiz games in the car and at meal times.
Regarding Trimester 3 grading, I will communicate with parents whose students are not completing homework and tests, and who are not utilizing class time effectively. Students may attend my math help hours to improve understanding and raise scores.
